The Modern On-Prem Philosophy

Software used to be simple. You paid for it, you owned it, you ran it. Then came the cloud, and with it, a fundamental shift in who controls what.

Redefining “On-Prem”

Let’s clear something up: modern on-prem isn’t about owning a data center. It’s not about racking servers in your basement. It’s not even about colocation.

On-prem is a philosophy, not a location.

Your infrastructure can live anywhere:

  • A $5/month VPS
  • Bare metal servers from Hetzner
  • VMs on AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • A Raspberry Pi cluster in your office
  • A proper colocation facility

The physical location doesn’t matter. What matters is the relationship between you and your software.

  Location: Anywhere (doesn't matter)

When you run software on a rented VM, you still control:

  • What version you run
  • When (or if) you update
  • Who has access
  • Where your data goes
  • How long you keep it running

That’s fundamentally different from SaaS, where you control nothing. The vendor can change the product, raise prices, or shut it down entirely—and you just have to deal with it.

Modern on-prem means: you own the software, you control the deployment, regardless of where the bits physically live.

Step 3: Raise prices. Once you’re locked in, the “pricing update” emails start. Always framed as “delivering more value.” Always costing you more.
